The original victory gardens were planted in backyards and public parks during World Wars I and II to shore up the food supply during wartime. Recently, people have been planting victory gardens again, but this time the enemy is an unhealthy, impersonal, and inefficient food system.
To support the new, 21st-century victory garden, Joe Wirtheim, a Portland, Oregon-based artist, has been producing a series of posters that borrows the visual aesthetic of “American mid-century homefront propaganda” to promote today’s struggle for sustainability.
